Ludlow borders Chicopee directly to the east, which makes it one of the fastest towns in the region to get a truck to. With just over 21,000 people it is a substantial town with a strong Portuguese American community and a housing stock that runs from mill era workers' housing to postwar and modern subdivisions.

Long tenure is what shapes the work here

Ludlow has a lot of families who have been in the same house for decades, sometimes generations. That is pleasant for the town and it produces a particular kind of junk removal job: the full basement, the packed attic, the garage that has not held a car since the eighties, and eventually the estate clearance when a house finally changes hands.

Those are not one item calls. They are multi truckload jobs that take a day or more and need a walkthrough before anybody quotes a number. If you are clearing a family house here, the walkthrough for valuables comes first, before any truck is booked.

The Ludlow Mills

The Ludlow Mills complex on the river is one of the largest mill redevelopment projects in the region, and mill buildings under conversion generate a completely different kind of work. Construction and demolition debris rather than household junk, priced by weight rather than volume, and going to a construction and demolition processing facility rather than a transfer station.

Massachusetts banned wood, metal, brick, concrete and asphalt from landfill disposal on 1 July 2006, and clean gypsum wallboard on 1 July 2011. On a building of that age there is also a real asbestos question, which is licensed work and not something any hauler should be touching.

Suburban streets, suburban jobs

The newer parts of town produce the outdoor work: sheds that have gone soft, above ground pools nobody swims in, playsets the children outgrew, and hot tubs that stopped being worth the electricity. All of those are half day jobs, and all of them are cheaper if you settle the questions about slabs, footings and electrical disconnection before the crew arrives rather than during.

What the town does

Ludlow runs its own collection and its own rules on bulk items, which change, so the town's public works page is the place to check rather than a page like this one. As everywhere in Massachusetts, mattresses, textiles, appliances, electronics and metal cannot be thrown away regardless of what your town collects.

The eastern half of town is rural

Ludlow gets noticeably more rural as you go east and north, with larger lots, longer driveways and properties that back onto woods and water. That produces a different job again: brush and storm debris, barns and outbuildings, and the accumulated equipment of a property somebody has maintained themselves for thirty years.

Yard waste has its own rules statewide. Leaves were banned from disposal at the end of 1991 and the wider yard waste category at the end of 1992, so brush is composted or chipped rather than buried. It is priced by volume, and because brush is mostly air, cutting branches down to shorter lengths before a truck arrives genuinely lowers the bill.

One thing worth doing before you book

If the job is a whole house rather than a single item, walk it once for anything of value before any truck is scheduled. Cash tucked in books, documents, jewelry, photographs and paperwork. Once a crew is working at pace, a shoebox of letters and a shoebox of receipts look identical, and that is not a mistake anybody can undo afterwards.

The other thing worth settling first is who is deciding. On a family house with several people involved, one point of contact saves a great deal of stopping and starting, and a keep pile marked with tape or a closed door survives a change of crew in a way that a verbal instruction does not.

Ludlow Questions

How quickly can someone get to Ludlow?

Very quickly. Ludlow borders Chicopee directly, so it is among the closest towns to the base. Same day and next day slots are more often available here than in the outer parts of the region.

We are clearing my parents' house. Where do we start?

+
With a walkthrough for anything of value before a truck is booked, ideally with an appraiser or an estate sale company. Ludlow has a lot of houses held by the same family for decades, so a full clearance is usually two to four truckloads over more than one day, and cash, documents and photographs are what gets lost when a crew is working at pace.

Can you take construction debris from a mill conversion?

+
Yes, but it is priced differently. Debris is dense enough that a truck hits its weight limit before it fills up, so expect a weight clause. On a building of that age, asbestos testing needs to happen before demolition, and that is licensed work rather than hauling.

What about an above ground pool or a shed?

+
Both are common here and both are half day jobs. Drain a pool completely beforehand, and decide before booking whether a shed's concrete slab is staying or going. Those two decisions move the price more than the size of the structure does.

Does Ludlow collect bulk items?

+
The town runs its own program and the details change, so check the town's public works page. What holds everywhere in Massachusetts is that mattresses, textiles, appliances and electronics are banned from disposal, so they have their own routes whatever your town does.
