A couch is the classic junk removal job because it is the one thing in a house that almost nobody can move alone. Getting it out is usually harder than getting it in, because whoever delivered it had an empty room and a dolly.

What makes a furniture job cost more than you expect

Stairs. Every flight adds time and adds a second person to the crew. A third floor walk up in Holyoke or the South End of Springfield is a genuinely different job from a ranch in Wilbraham, and the quote reflects that. This is also the whole reason to call somebody rather than use the town bulk pickup, because every municipal program in this region requires the item to already be at the curb.

Disassembly. A bed frame comes apart in five minutes. A sectional that was built in the room does not, and a wall unit screwed to studs is closer to light demolition than furniture removal. If something needs taking apart, say so when you call so the right number of people show up with the right tools.

Access. A long carry from a back bedroom, down a hall, through a kitchen, out to a truck parked half a block away because there is nowhere closer, adds real time. In dense parts of Springfield, Holyoke and downtown Northampton, where the truck can park is a bigger factor than what you are throwing out.

One thing worth saying before the hauler arrives

If there is any chance of bed bugs, say it on the phone. It is not a reason for anyone to refuse the job, but it changes how it is handled. The item gets bagged on site so it does not contaminate the truck or the recycling facility, and a hauler who finds out afterwards has a much bigger problem than one who was told.
