Each of those has to be separated and taken somewhere specific.

That separation is the real reason a proper hauler costs more than a man with a pickup. Transfer stations inspect incoming loads. A load with a mattress buried in it gets rejected or surcharged at the gate, and that cost lands on somebody. A hauler who sorts on the truck is not being fussy, they are staying in business.

It is also worth knowing that MassDEP guidance puts responsibility on both the generator and the transporter. That means you are not entirely insulated by hiring someone. It is a modest reason to care whether the person taking your things away is actually going to a facility.

What will not go in the truck

Paint, motor oil, antifreeze, solvents, pesticides, propane tanks, and anything else classed as household hazardous waste. Those go to your town's hazardous waste collection day, which most towns in this region run once or twice a year. Asbestos is a separate licensed trade entirely. Nobody reputable takes any of it, and someone offering to is a warning sign rather than a convenience.
