Carpet removal is one of the few jobs where the material you did not think about doubles the bill. The carpet is one layer. Under it is padding, and padding is bulkier than the carpet itself once it is rolled.

A typical room produces two rolls, not one. Carpet is dense and heavy, roughly the weight of a person for an average bedroom. Padding is light but takes enormous space, and space is what you are paying for. Between them a single average room fills a noticeable fraction of a truck.

The other surprise is what is nailed to the floor. Tack strips run around the whole perimeter, they are held down with masonry nails or staples, and they are covered in sharp tacks pointing up. Pulling them takes a pry bar and time, and leaving them means the next floor cannot go down.

Older Western Mass floors have a complication

In housing stock from the 1850s to the 1930s, which describes most of Holyoke, much of Springfield and a good share of every mill town in this region, carpet was often laid straight over the original hardwood. Sometimes it is glued. Sometimes it is stapled every few inches. What comes up underneath can be a beautiful floor or a ruined one, and you will not know until it is off.

What The Quote Covers

  • Cutting and rolling the carpet
  • Lifting and bagging the padding
  • Pulling tack strips and staples
  • Carrying it out and loading
  • Sweeping the subfloor after

What Moves The Price

  • Square footage, because this one really is priced by area
  • Whether it is glued down, especially on a concrete slab
  • Stairs, which take far longer per square foot
  • How far the rolls have to be carried
  • Whether the padding is included, and it usually is
Estimates for the Western Mass market, not quotes. The hauler sets the real price once they have seen the pile. Stairs, weight, and access all move it.

What makes a carpet job take longer than an hour

Glue. Carpet glued directly to a concrete slab, common in a finished basement, does not roll up. It comes off in strips, and the adhesive residue stays behind. Scraping that is a different trade and a different price. If it is a basement, say so on the phone.

Stairs. Carpet on a staircase is fitted piece by piece around each tread and riser, often with hundreds of staples. A flight of stairs can take as long as a whole bedroom, and it is worth pricing separately when you ask.

Volume. This is the honest reason carpet is priced by area rather than by item. A whole first floor of an average house can be most of a truck once the padding is in there too. If you are doing several rooms, expect half a truck as a starting point.

Where it goes, and why the answer is not great

Mostly a transfer station. Carpet recycling exists but the infrastructure for it is thin in this part of the state, and mixed fiber broadloom has almost no end market. Massachusetts does not currently ban carpet from disposal. The tack strips are wood and nails, so they split between the construction and demolition stream and scrap. Anybody promising carpet recycling should be able to name the facility.

How Carpet Removal Actually Goes

1
First call

Room count and square footage

Say whether any of it is on stairs or glued to concrete, because both change the price a lot.

2
On arrival

A look at one corner

Lifting a corner tells them whether it is tacked, stapled or glued, which sets the real number.

3
1 to 4 hours

Cut, rolled and out

Carpet first, then padding, then tack strips and staples around the perimeter.

4
Before they leave

Subfloor swept

You want it clean enough to walk on in socks, because the next trade is coming.

What Can Delay It

  • Glue on a concrete slab, which turns rolling into scraping
  • Stairs, which take about as long as a bedroom each
  • Finding a second layer of carpet under the first, which happens

What Speeds It Up

  • Clearing all the furniture out beforehand
  • Doing every room in the house in one visit
  • Saying up front if any of it is glued or on stairs

Carpet Removal Questions

How much does carpet removal cost?

Around $1 to $5 per square foot for removal and disposal, or roughly $150 to $400 for a few rooms in this area. It is one of the few junk removal jobs genuinely priced by area rather than truck volume, because the volume tracks the floor space closely.

Does the price include the padding?

+
Almost always, and you should confirm it. Padding is light but takes up more truck space than the carpet does once it is bagged, so a quote that excludes it is not really a quote.

What are tack strips and do they have to come up?

+
Thin wooden strips nailed around the room perimeter with sharp tacks pointing upward, which is what holds the carpet stretched. They have to come up before any new flooring goes down, and they are nailed into the subfloor, so it is pry bar work rather than pulling by hand.

Is there hardwood under my carpet?

+
In this region, often. Housing built between the 1850s and 1930s across Holyoke, Springfield and the mill towns usually has hardwood under later carpet. Whether it is in good shape depends on whether the carpet was tacked, which is fine, or glued and stapled every few inches, which is not.

Can they remove glued down carpet?

+
They can get the carpet up, but adhesive residue on a concrete slab is a scraping and grinding job rather than a hauling one. Some haulers do it and price it separately, some will not. Mention a basement or a slab floor on the first call.

Is carpet recycled?

+
Mostly not, and it is worth being straight about that. Carpet recycling exists but the facilities are thin on the ground in Western Mass and mixed fiber broadloom has almost no end market. Massachusetts does not ban carpet from disposal, so it generally goes to a transfer station.

How long does a house take?

+
Roughly an hour a room for tacked carpet on a flat floor, longer for stairs, much longer for anything glued. A whole first floor is usually a half day.

Do I need to move the furniture?

+
It helps a lot, and it lowers the price. Most haulers will move it for you if you ask, but that is labor time added to the bill and it is the one part of this job you can genuinely do yourself.
