Work out what you have paid so far. A unit at $85 a month for four years is over four thousand dollars. Then look at what is in it. For a lot of people the honest answer is that the contents would not fetch a few hundred, and every additional month is money spent to avoid a decision. A clear out costs $300 to $800 and stops the bleeding.

If you bought it at auction

You are on a clock. Facilities normally require a purchased unit to be emptied within a short window, often twenty four to seventy two hours, and they will charge you or keep the deposit if you run over. That means booking the haul before you bid, not after, which very few first time buyers do.

You are also required to leave it broom clean, which is not the same as empty. That is part of the deal, and it is the part people forget when they are calculating whether the unit was worth it.

What is in it is genuinely unknown, so a hauler who quotes on the spot rather than in advance is the sensible match here. Bring the truck, look, agree a price, load.

What tends to be in a long term unit

Furniture from a house that was sold, boxes that were never opened after a move, and a lot of textiles, because clothing is what people put in storage. Textiles have been banned from disposal in Massachusetts since 1 November 2022, so those bags go to recycling or donation, not a transfer station. Damp is common too, because units are unheated and things that sat through several Western Mass winters do not always survive.
