West Springfield borders Chicopee to the southwest and sits directly across the Connecticut River from Springfield. Locals call it West Side, and although it has a city form of government it is legally the Town of West Springfield, so town is the word people here use.

A mix of housing, and a mix of jobs

The town runs from older, denser neighborhoods near the river out to postwar suburban streets, with commercial corridors along Riverdale Street in between. That produces a wide spread of work: attic and basement clearances in the older houses, garage and shed jobs in the suburban parts, and commercial cleanouts along the retail strip.

With around 28,835 people it is one of the larger municipalities in Hampden County, and the proximity to Chicopee means it is one of the quickest places to get a truck to.

The Big E changes September

The Eastern States Exposition sits on 175 acres between Memorial Avenue and the Westfield River, runs 17 days each September, and drew 1,633,935 people in 2024. It is the largest agricultural event on the eastern seaboard and the fifth largest fair in the country.

For anything practical happening in West Side in September, that matters. Memorial Avenue and the approaches back up badly, and a crew routing a truck through the middle of it loses time nobody is getting back. If your job is not urgent and it is fair season, the week after is a better week.

What the town collects

West Springfield runs its own trash and recycling program with its own rules on bulk items, and like every municipal program in this region it requires you to get the item to the curb yourself. Check the town's public works page for what is currently accepted and what it costs, because those details change and a page like this one is the wrong place to fix them in print.

What does not change is the Massachusetts side of it. Mattresses, textiles, appliances, electronics and metal are all banned from disposal statewide, so they have their own routes no matter which town you are in.

The commercial side

The Riverdale Street corridor and the older commercial buildings around it generate a steady amount of office and retail clearance work. Those jobs run on lease dates rather than convenience, and they often need after hours access and a certificate of insurance before a crew can get in the building. Worth raising on the first call rather than the morning of.

Which village you are in changes the job

West Side is really several places. Merrick and Mittineague are the older, denser neighborhoods, built when this was a mill and rail town, with narrow lots, tight street parking and two and three story houses. Tatham and the streets off Piper Road are later and more suburban, with driveways, garages and room for a truck.

That difference matters more than the item list does. A dresser in a Merrick two family with a shared stairwell and no driveway is a different job from the same dresser in a Tatham garage. Say roughly where you are when you call and the quote will be closer to right.

What comes out of a West Side basement

The older housing here has full basements, and a lot of them still have the remains of a converted heating system in them. Cast iron radiators taken out when a house went from steam to forced air are extremely common in this town, and they are 300 to 600 pounds each. They are also good scrap, which means they lower the price of a load rather than raising it.

The other standard find is a second refrigerator or a chest freezer that has been running in the basement since the nineties. Those carry a refrigerant recovery fee of $25 to $50 under federal law, and they need defrosting a day ahead so they do not leak up the stairs on the way out.

The third is a cast iron bathtub, pulled out during a bathroom remodel and never dealt with. At 250 to 350 pounds it is one of the heaviest single items in an older house, and it is also clean scrap.
