Montague has 8,580 people and is genuinely five places rather than one: Turners Falls, Millers Falls, Montague Center, Montague City and Lake Pleasant. Turners Falls is the largest and the most built up, an industrial village laid out around a power canal on the Connecticut River.
Turners Falls is a small city in a rural county
The village was planned around water power, which means a dense grid of older multi family housing, brick industrial buildings and a downtown that looks nothing like the rest of Franklin County. Clearances there behave like city jobs: stairs, tight street parking, and access setting the price rather than the volume.
The mill buildings themselves generate a different kind of work when they are converted. That is construction and demolition debris, priced by weight rather than volume, and on buildings of that age asbestos testing has to come before any demolition.
The other four villages
Montague Center, Montague City, Millers Falls and Lake Pleasant are all smaller and more rural, with single family houses, larger lots, garages and outbuildings. Saying which village you are in tells a hauler more about the job than a list of items does.
What the state requires regardless
Whatever the village, the Massachusetts disposal bans apply. Mattresses and textiles since 1 November 2022. Tube televisions since 2000. Appliances since 1991. Metal and construction wood since 2006. That means even a straightforward household load needs sorting rather than tipping.
Montague is around forty minutes from the Chicopee base, so a day or two of notice makes scheduling much easier than calling on the morning.
Lake Pleasant is its own thing
Lake Pleasant is a small, tightly built village of closely spaced cottages, laid out on a scale that predates anybody planning for a truck. Lots are small, roads are narrow, and where a vehicle can stop is a genuine constraint rather than a detail.
That does not stop the work, it just means a longer carry and a bit more time, both of which show up in the quote. Say you are in Lake Pleasant when you call and the estimate will be closer to what the day actually costs.
