Williamsburg has 2,504 people and marks the point where the valley gives way to the hilltowns. It has two village centers, Williamsburg and Haydenville, and a history shaped by the Mill River flood of 1874, when a dam failure sent water down this valley and killed well over a hundred people.

Two villages, both built along the water

Both village centers grew up along the Mill River because that is where the power was, which means older, closely built housing with full basements and narrow stairs. Clearances there are priced by the stairs more than the volume.

It also means basements that take water in a wet spring. Cardboard that has sat on a damp slab for years has no strength left, so boxes get handled as loose contents rather than lifted, which takes longer and is worth mentioning on the phone.

Hill country beyond the villages

Outside the two centers Williamsburg is steep, wooded and rural, with long driveways and properties set well back. Brush and storm debris are a regular part of the work, and access is the thing to describe when you call.

Yard waste has been banned from Massachusetts disposal since the early nineties, so brush goes to composting or chipping. It is priced by volume and brush is mostly air, so cutting it down before the truck arrives lowers the bill.

Distance and scheduling

Williamsburg is thirty to forty five minutes from the Chicopee base, at the point where the region starts getting genuinely rural. It is booked regularly, and a couple of days of notice is worth more here than it is closer in.

Sugar houses and the metal in them

This is sugaring country, and a sugar house that has gone out of use holds a particular kind of material: evaporator pans, tanks, buckets, tubing, stove parts and a great deal of sheet metal and steel.

That is good news for the bill. Metal goes to a scrap yard rather than a transfer station, which Massachusetts has required since 2006, and it lowers the price of a load rather than raising it. It is worth saying on the phone that a load is metal heavy, because it genuinely changes the number.

Williamsburg Questions

Do you cover Haydenville?

Yes, and both village centers. They have similar housing, built along the river, with the same tight access and full basements.

My basement is damp. Does that change the job?

+
Somewhat. Wet cardboard collapses, so boxes get handled as loose contents rather than lifted, which takes longer. Mattresses and textiles contaminated by mold are exempt from the state disposal ban, so those can go to disposal rather than a recycler.

How far is Williamsburg from Chicopee?

+
Thirty to forty five minutes. It is booked regularly, and a couple of days of notice helps out here.

Can a truck reach a hillside property?

+
Usually, but describe the driveway when you call, especially if it is long, steep or unpaved. A loaded truck needs firm ground and somewhere to turn.
