Palmer has 12,448 people and is legally the Town of Palmer despite a city form of government. It is known as the Town of Seven Railroads for the lines that once converged here, and it is really four places rather than one: Depot Village, Three Rivers, Thorndike and Bondsville.

Four villages, four kinds of job

The villages grew up around separate mills on separate stretches of water, and they still feel separate. Three Rivers and Thorndike have the denser mill era housing, with multi family buildings, narrow stairs and full basements. Out toward the edges of town it is rural, with larger properties, barns and long driveways.

The radiators are good news, because metal has been banned from Massachusetts disposal since 1 July 2006 and goes to a scrap yard, which lowers the price of a load. The freezer is the opposite, carrying a refrigerant recovery fee of $25 to $50 because federal law requires a certified technician to take the refrigerant out first.

What the town does

What does not change is that mattresses, textiles, appliances, electronics and metal are banned from disposal statewide and have their own routes whatever your town collects.

The rail corridor

The lines that gave Palmer its nickname also gave it industrial land, and the parcels and buildings along those corridors still generate commercial clearances. That work is a different animal from a household job: it runs on lease dates, the material is mostly metal and racking, and building management usually wants a certificate of insurance before a crew is allowed on site.

The metal is the useful part. Shelving, racking, workbenches and machinery all go to a scrap yard rather than a transfer station, which Massachusetts has required since 2006, and that offsets a real share of the cost.
