Monson has 8,150 people in a hilly, largely rural town east of Springfield. It was a granite quarrying town, and Monson granite went into buildings across the northeast. It is also one of the places that took the worst of the 1 June 2011 tornado.

The tornado is still part of the picture

The 2011 tornado tracked through Springfield, Wilbraham and Monson, and it took down an enormous amount of tree cover here. Fifteen years on the changed treeline is still visible and property owners in this town have a longer memory than most for what a storm can do to a hillside lot.

Storm debris is recurring work as a result. The practical advice after any big weather event is the same: unless something is blocking a driveway or leaning on a building, waiting two weeks usually gets both a better price and a faster slot, because everybody calls in the same three days.

Brush is priced by volume

Yard waste has been off the Massachusetts disposal list since the early nineties, so brush goes to composting or chipping rather than a landfill. It is priced by the space it takes in a truck, and brush is mostly air, which means a pile that looks enormous is often a half truck.

Stone is worth flagging separately when you call, because it is priced by weight rather than volume. A small pile can put a truck near its legal limit while filling almost none of it, which is the opposite of how the rest of a load behaves.
