Greenfield is the county seat and the only city in Franklin County, with 17,768 people. In a county of 26 municipalities totaling roughly 70,700 people, it is the natural center for almost everything, and that includes this.

The hub for a very rural county

Franklin County is the most rural county in Massachusetts. Outside Greenfield and Montague, the towns are small, many under 2,000 people, and several under 1,000. Greenfield is where the county's services, shops and infrastructure concentrate.

For this work that matters practically. A truck coming north from Chicopee is roughly forty minutes to Greenfield, and once it is up here it makes sense to do more than one job. If you are in Franklin County and not in a hurry, saying so can get you a better slot, because it lets a hauler pair your job with another one nearby.

Old housing and older outbuildings

Greenfield has a Main Street historic district and a classic New England downtown, with residential streets of older houses around it. Full basements, walk up attics, and in the outer parts of town barns and sheds that have been standing a very long time.

Barn clearances are a Franklin County specialty and they are not small jobs. Farm machinery, building materials, tools, tires and a great deal of metal. Metal is the good news, because Massachusetts has banned it from disposal since 2006 and it goes to a scrap yard, lowering the price of the load.

Aging housing stock, changing hands

A steady share of the work here is estate clearance, because the housing stock is old and long held. Those jobs come with deadlines attached, either probate or a closing date, and they need a walkthrough for valuables before any truck is booked.

The textile ban of 1 November 2022 lands hard on estate work anywhere, and it lands hardest on a house that has been lived in for fifty years. Clothing, bedding, towels, curtains and fabric all have to go to donation or textile recycling rather than a transfer station.

Distance is the honest caveat

Greenfield is about forty minutes from the Chicopee base, which is further than most of what this site covers. It is comfortably serviceable and it is booked regularly, but same day slots are less common here than in Hampden County, and a couple of days of notice makes a real difference to what is possible.

Commercial work downtown

As the county's commercial center, Greenfield generates office and retail clearances that the rest of Franklin County does not. Those run on lease dates, often need a certificate of insurance for the building, and sometimes have loading access that only works at certain hours.

The material is largely metal, which helps. Desks, shelving, filing cabinets and racking all go to a scrap yard, which is required anyway since 2006 and which offsets part of the cost. Business electronics need a separate decision about certified data destruction, and that is worth arranging at booking rather than after the truck has gone.

What will not go

Paint, motor oil, antifreeze, solvents, pesticides, fertilizer and propane cylinders are household hazardous waste and cannot be loaded. They go to the town's collection day. On a rural property that list is usually longer than it is in a city, so it is worth walking the barn once before a crew arrives and pulling it all into one corner.

Greenfield Questions

Is Greenfield a city?

Yes, one of two in this region without wards, along with Easthampton. It is the county seat and the only city in Franklin County, which makes it the hub for the 26 towns around it.

How long does it take to get there from Chicopee?

+
About forty minutes. It is comfortably within the service area and booked regularly, but same day slots are less common here than closer in. A couple of days of notice makes a real difference.

Can you clear a barn?

+
Yes, and it is common work in this county. Expect several truckloads rather than one, and a walkthrough before anyone quotes a number. Count the tires beforehand, because each carries a fee, and set aside any paint, oil, fertilizer or propane, because none of that can go in a truck.

Do you cover the rest of Franklin County?

+
Yes, every town in it. Being flexible on the day helps, because it lets a hauler pair your job with another one nearby, and in a rural county that is what makes the trip work.

We are clearing a family house. Where do we start?

+
With a walkthrough for anything of value before any truck is booked. Then mark the keep pile physically rather than describing it. A full house is usually two to four truckloads over more than one day, and if there is a closing date, say it on the first call.
