Belchertown has 15,350 people and sits on the western edge of the Quabbin Reservoir region. It is one of the faster growing towns in Hampshire County, and it combines a rural land pattern with a steadily increasing number of newer subdivisions.

Two kinds of property, two kinds of job

The older half of Belchertown is rural: large lots, barns, detached garages and outbuildings that have collected forty or fifty years of things. Those are multi truckload clearances that need a walkthrough before anyone quotes.

The newer half is suburban subdivision, and the work there is the familiar list: garages, basements, sheds, playsets and above ground pools. Easier access, flatter ground, and generally a half day rather than several.

The Quabbin side of town

Being near the reservoir means a lot of woodland, a lot of trees, and a genuine amount of brush and storm debris work. Yard waste has been banned from Massachusetts disposal since the early nineties, so it goes to composting or chipping rather than a hole in the ground.

Brush is priced by volume and it is mostly air, so a pile that looks huge is often a half truck. Cutting branches down before a truck arrives lowers the bill, and stumps are usually refused because the root ball wrecks a chipper.

The state school site

The former Belchertown State School property has been undergoing redevelopment for years, and large institutional redevelopment produces construction and demolition debris rather than household junk. That is weight priced rather than volume priced, and on buildings of that vintage it also raises asbestos questions that are licensed work.

No city services to fall back on

Belchertown does not offer what a valley city offers. Arrangements here work differently and change, so the town's own page is the place to check rather than a number printed on a site like this one.

What that means practically is that anything large, heavy or awkward is yours to move. For a household with a pickup and a free Saturday that is workable. For a chest freezer in a basement, a barn full of forty years of things, or a pile of storm brush, it is why people call.

What will not go in a truck

Rural properties collect more of this than valley houses do. Motor oil, antifreeze, pesticides, old fertilizer, solvents, paint and propane cylinders are all household hazardous waste and none of it can be loaded. It goes to the town's hazardous waste collection day, which most towns in this region run once or twice a year.

Sealed pressure vessels are the other refusal. A propane tank, an oxygen or acetylene cylinder or an old fuel oil tank cannot be taken until it has been purged and certified empty, and no scrap yard will accept one either. Pull those out into their own corner before a crew arrives.

The newer subdivisions

Belchertown has been growing steadily, and the newer streets produce the standard suburban list: garage clearances, shed removals, above ground pools, playsets and hot tubs.

Those are all half day jobs and they are all cheaper if the decisions are made before the crew arrives rather than during. For a shed, whether the slab stays. For a pool, whether it is drained. For a hot tub, whether an electrician has disconnected the 240 volt circuit, which has to happen before anybody touches it.

Belchertown Questions

Can you clear a barn?

Yes, and it is usually several truckloads rather than one. Barns hold furniture, tools, machinery, building materials, tires and a lot of metal. Metal lowers the price because it goes to scrap. Tires raise it, at roughly $5 to $20 each. Count them before you call.

How far is Belchertown from Chicopee?

+
Fifteen to thirty minutes depending on where in town you are, so it schedules easily most of the year. The larger clearances need a walkthrough first, which usually means booking a few days out.

Do you take brush and storm debris?

+
Yes. It is priced by volume and brush is mostly air, so cutting it down to shorter lengths beforehand genuinely lowers the price. Stumps are generally refused because the soil and stone in a root ball destroys a chipper. After a big storm, waiting two weeks gets a better slot if nothing is urgent.

What about construction debris?

+
It goes, but it is priced by weight rather than volume because debris is dense. Expect a weight clause. Wood, metal, brick and concrete have been banned from Massachusetts landfills since 2006 and gypsum wallboard since 2011, so it goes to a construction and demolition facility.

Does the town collect big items?

+
Belchertown works differently from the valley cities and the arrangements change, so check the town's own page. The practical result is that anything heavy or awkward has to be moved by you, which is generally why people call somebody.
