Brimfield has 3,694 people and is known far outside Western Massachusetts for the Brimfield Antique Flea Markets, which run three times a year along Route 20 and are the largest outdoor antiques event in the United States.
The shows change what people need
Three times a year this town fills with dealers and buyers, and both ends of that produce work. Dealers clear out stock that did not sell and do not want to haul it home. Buyers fill houses with things that eventually have to go somewhere. Houses in and around Brimfield hold more furniture, more crockery and more genuinely old things than an average town's.
That matters practically, because it changes the advice. In a house here, more of what is being cleared may actually be worth something. The valuables walkthrough before booking a truck is not a formality in this town, it is the important step.
Show weeks are busy weeks
During the May, July and September shows, Route 20 through Brimfield is congested and parking is not what it normally is. It rarely stops a job but it makes a morning slot better than an afternoon one, and if your work is not urgent the week after a show is easier than the week of it.
Rural property, rural clearances
Outside the shows Brimfield is a small rural town with large lots, barns and outbuildings. Barn clearances here run to several truckloads and contain the usual mix: furniture, tools, building materials, tires and a great deal of metal.
Metal goes to a scrap yard and lowers the price of a load. Tires go the other way at roughly $5 to $20 each, because whole tires have been banned from Massachusetts landfills since 1991 and have to be shredded. Count them before you call.
Dealers have a problem the rest of us do not
A dealer who came to sell and did not sell everything is facing a choice between hauling it home and dealing with it here. That is a genuine and recurring call in this town in the days after each show, and it is usually a straightforward quarter to half truck job.
The thing worth saying is that unsold stock is not junk by definition. It did not sell at this show. Anything genuinely usable should be going to donation rather than a transfer station, and it is worth asking a hauler what they do with it before the truck is loaded rather than after.
