Russell has 1,643 people and sits on the Westfield River where the valley narrows into the hills. It was a paper mill town, and the village housing was built for the people who worked in those mills.

Mill village housing

The housing in the village is close together, older, and built with full basements and narrow stairs. That makes a clearance here look more like a small city job than a rural one, with the stairs setting the price rather than the volume.

It also means the usual finds. Cast iron radiators from a heating conversion at 300 to 600 pounds each, which are excellent scrap. A chest freezer that has run in the basement for thirty years, which carries a refrigerant recovery fee because federal law requires certified recovery before it can be scrapped.

The rest of town is hills and river

Away from the village Russell is steep and wooded, with properties on hillsides and long driveways. Brush and storm debris are a real part of the work here, and the river valley funnels weather in a way the flatter towns do not experience.

If your driveway is long, steep or unpaved, mention it. A loaded truck needs somewhere to turn and firm ground to leave on, and this is one of the towns where that is a genuine consideration rather than a formality.

A small town's arrangements

Russell does not run what a city runs, and the arrangements change, so the town's own page is the place to check. The statewide bans apply regardless. Mattresses, textiles, appliances, electronics and metal all have their own routes whatever your town collects.

The old paper mill land

Russell's mills are long closed and the land and buildings associated with them have been through various stages since. Where anything is being worked on, the material is construction and demolition debris rather than household junk.

That is priced by weight rather than truck volume, because debris hits a truck's legal limit at about half capacity. Massachusetts banned wood, metal, brick and concrete from landfills in 2006 and gypsum wallboard in 2011, so it goes to a construction and demolition facility, and on buildings of that age asbestos testing comes before any demolition.

Russell Questions

Can they get a freezer out of a village basement?

Usually, and it is common work. Say whether the stairs are interior or a bulkhead, because a straight bulkhead run is much easier than a turning pre war staircase. Defrost it a day ahead so it does not leak on the way out.

My driveway is steep. Is that a problem?

+
Say so when you call, particularly after wet weather. A loaded truck needs firm ground and a place to turn, and in this town that is a real consideration rather than a formality.

How far is Russell from Chicopee?

+
Thirty to forty five minutes, west along the river. It is booked regularly with a day or two of notice.

Do you take brush and storm debris?

+
Yes. It is priced by volume and brush is mostly air, so cutting it down beforehand lowers the price. After a big storm everybody calls at once, so waiting two weeks gets a better slot if nothing is urgent.
